Best Lithium Batteries For Mobility Scooters

What topic are we exploring today? Well, it’s a good one. It’s an analysis of the best Lithium batteries for mobility scooters.

An increasing number of mobility scooter manufacturers are designing their scooters with Lithium batteries in mind

Why have they become so popular?

That’s because simply they’re lighter, provide more power over a longer time, and their lifespans are 5-10 times that of lead-acid batteries.

They’re not cheap… but the good news is that their price has come down a lot in recent years. So much so that it now works out much cheaper in the long-term to choose a Lithium battery over a lead acid one.

So, then. Seems like a good time to explore Lithium batteries and check out what the best ones are for mobility scooters.

Best Lithium Batteries for Mobility Scooters

Lithium Batteries For Mobility Scooters List

Let’s talk about our criteria for choosing our winning batteries.

How did we choose the top (LiFePO4) battery of each size?

In 2022, there are plenty of Lithium ion battery manufacturers around, and plenty of different brands to choose from.

We’ve put together the list that follows of the makers that we know use top quality Lithium, have well constructed batteries, and that use sufficiently robust internal components.

We also know from our testing and from analysing the Lithium (LiFePO4) market that their batteries have proven longevity and reliability.

To meet our standards, the batteries we’ve recommended all must have modern BMS (an electronic circuit that acts as a Lithium battery’s brain) of requisite quality. That means they have automatic, built-in protection for overcharge, over-discharge, over-current and over-temperature.

Now let’s analyse our likes and dislikes from testing these batteries.

best 12ah lithium battery

DCHouse 12Ah Lithium Battery

This is the best 12Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

Here are our likes and dislikes in our testing.

What We Liked
  • That cycle life is really enormous. 3000 cycles at 80% DoD is great. DCHouse’s Lithium and internal components are very high quality so we do believe a high cycle life is possible (perhaps not quite 8k though, unless you take exceptional care with discharging it!).
  • It’s very lightweight. At 1.4kg, it’s around 20-30% of the weight of the equivalent lead-acid battery.
  • Great connection potential to build battery systems – up to 4 in series, and you can join an unlimited amount in parallel.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Don’t discharge it fully. You can’t rely on reaching as much as 3000 cycles, unless you are only taking it to 80% DoD with each charge.

Who are DCHouse?

Almost all the Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries in the world are made in China.

DCHouse are a Chinese company, though they do have subsidiaries in the US and the UK. They’ve been around for more than 20 years now, and they have a good reputation across the boating and solar industries for the quality of their batteries.

Their batteries have good reputation and performed well for sustained power delivery in our testing.

See the best priced seller, it’s on Amazon right here.

Ultramax 12Ah Lithium Battery

This is the runner-up 12Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

Check out the photo. And see our likes and dislikes in our testing.

What We Liked
  • Just 3% self-discharge per month. That’s comparable to the top LiFePO4 batteries in the world.
  • Copes very well with deep discharge. Even if you discharge it to 90%, it is not harmed like a lead-acid battery would be.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Cycle life is likely to be a lot less than the DCHouse model – 2k compared to 3k for the DCHouse 12Ah model. Remember though, it’s around 10% cheaper! And also remember it’s still going to last a lot longer than a lead acid battery.

Who are Ultramax?

Ultramax are a British company, based in London.

They have production facilities in both the UK and the Far-East, it’s likely that their Lithium batteries are made in China.

They’re a subsidiary of Baruch, a well-known British battery wholesaler and distributor.

You can find it cheapest here.

Best 15Ah Lithium Battery for Mobility Scooter

No 15Ah Lithium ion batteries on the market in the UK met our standards.

So if you want a Lithium battery and you know a 15Ah battery will fit your scooter, then you can get one of the 12Ah mobility scooter batteries we recommended above.

The other option is to get a high quality AGM 15Ah battery, like this SLK Power mobility scooter battery.

It’s cheaper than a Lithium battery, just remember that its lifespan will be a lot shorter, and it won’t deliver as much power.

Best 17Ah, 18Ah, 20Ah, 22Ah LiFePO4 Battery

We’ve grouped these battery capacity sizes together, since their dimensions are the same.

You can use any of these sizes. For example, if you currently have a 17Ah Lithium battery, you can use a 22Ah battery since the dimensions are the same.

And to give you a specific example, the Veleco Faster Lithium battery mobility scooter has 20Ah batteries as standard, but these batteries can be replaced by any model in this section.

It’s always a good idea to double check dimensions, in any case!

Ultramax, Lachy, Miady 17-22Ah Battery Reviews

Now let’s analyse our likes and dislikes from testing these batteries.

best 17Ah to 22Ah Lithium battery

Ultramax 22Ah Lithium Battery

This is the best 17-22Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

It can be a direct replacement for any 17Ah, 18Ah, 20Ah, or 22Ah lead-acid battery.

Here’s the product info and our pros and cons from our testing.

What We Liked
  • Delivers the most power out of all the batteries on the market of this size.
  • Holds its voltage really well – that means it keeps delivering a high level of power until the battery’s charge is nearly gone. If you’re on a longer journey (to the shops on your scooter, perhaps) on your mobility scooter, that can be very important to you.
  • At 2.9kg, it’s less than half the weight of Ultramax’s 22Ah lead-acid battery (which is 6kg). Less weight means your scooter can go faster and for longer.
  • Some people will prefer buying from a UK maker, compared to the other two batteries on this list, which are made by Chinese companies.
What We Didn’t Like
  • 2000 cycles is the broad estimate given for life cycles but remember that will be at a relatively moderate DoD (Depth of Discharge). At 80% DoD, the cycle life is 1500 cycles (this is still pretty good, though).
  • 6 hours charging time is just okay, there are faster charging LiFePO4 batteries on the market.
  • It’s higher priced than the our no.2 and no.3 (albeit it has larger capacity and so will take you further on your mobility scooter on each charge).

Here’s the lowest priced seller, it’s on Amazon right here.

Lachy 18Ah Lithium Battery

This is the No.2 17-22Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

Use as a replacement for any 17Ah-22Ah lead-acid battery.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What We Liked
  • Up to 100% DoD – that means you can completely discharge this Lachy battery and it will still be okay (though you should still try not to let it fully discharge too often if you want to maximum its lifespan).
  • It’s one of the most up-to-date LiFePO4 batteries on the market. What does that mean? It means the BMS is higher quality, which means more safety and reliability.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Lachy say in their user manual that it can be charged using most standard lead-acid chargers – it’s up to you, but we don’t recommend this, it can shorten battery lifespan and may never fully charge the LiFePO4 battery. Much better to use a charger that is specifically stated by the manufacturer as being suitable for charging Lithium batteries.
  • It’ll charge pretty slowly. 2 Amp recommended charging current (with maximum being 5A) is low. The Miady 20Ah battery, for example, allows for 10A charging.

The best place to get it is here.

Miady 20Ah Lithium Battery

This is the third best 17-22Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

It’s a drop in replacement for any 17Ah-22Ah lead-acid battery.

Here’s how it stacks up.

What We Liked
  • Terminals are some of the highest quality for Lithium batteries on the market, being copper, with silver plating. Why does that matter? People underestimate the importance of terminals but your battery’s power delivery is only as good as the terminals. That’s because they’re literally what the power must pass through. More conductivity means better and more consistent power delivery (less droppages) to your mobility scooter. In other words, you feel more oomph.
  • 2000 cycles is at 100% DoD. That means you’ll get a lot more than 2000 cycles as long as you don’t fully discharge the battery all the time.
  • Fast charging – we recommend a 4A charge.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Like the Lachy 18Ah battery, our No.2, some of Miady’s literature suggests you can use a lead-acid battery charger (though in other places they state they don’t recommend it). For our part, we certainly don’t recommend it, since it has the potential to harm the battery.

Check out the best priced place to get it, on Amazon.

Miady, Ultramax 36Ah Battery Reviews

Now let’s analyse our likes and dislikes from testing these batteries.

best 33Ah to 36Ah LiFePO4 battery

Miady 36Ah Lithium

It’s the best 33/36Ah Lithium mobility scooter battery.

Check out the important info about it below.

What We Liked
  • Like Miady’s 20Ah model elsewhere on this page, this battery has silver-plated copper terminals. This means better conductivity due to improved contact with your scooter’s terminals. This means more reliable power delivery, and it’s less likely to cut out or degrade as the battery ages.
  • Excellent power delivery. The maximum discharge current is 32 Amps, that means there’s plenty of power available in any situation where you need extra oomph! Such as going up a steep hill with a heavy load of shopping in the storage basket of your mobility scooter.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Self-discharge rate of 3.5% is not bad, and certainly far, far better than you’d ever get with a lead acid battery. But it pales in comparison to the No.2 battery in this category, the Ultramax 36Ah LiFePO4 battery, which has a self-discharge rate of 3% per month.
  • Miady suggest it can be fully charged in just 4.5 hours with 10A charge. But to us, this sounds too high a charge, at nearly 30% (Amps charging to battery Ah, 10/36). We recommend you charge a Lithium battery with Amperage 10-20% of the Ah of the battery. So in this case, it should be be somewhere between 3.6A and 7.2A charging.

See the lowest priced seller, it’s on Amazon right here.

Ultramax 36Ah Battery

This is the second top 33Ah or 36Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

Check out the specs, and the likes and dislikes in our testing.

What We Liked
  • Excellent high temperature performance. Some batteries struggle with high temperature, but not this one. Which is an advantage with the super hot summers we’re getting in the UK now.
  • Self-discharge rate of less than 3% per month is very good. If you keep this in storage unused for a long time, it will still be perfectly usable even after several months or even years.
What We Didn’t Like
  • It’s a little tall for a 33/36Ah battery, at 172mm. Make sure to check the space for the battery in your specific scooter. That said, be aware that the 172mm figure includes the terminals.

You can find it cheapest here.

Best 40Ah-50Ah Lithium Battery (to replace 40-50Ah lead-acid battery)

Be careful with sizing when we get into the 40-55Ah categories.

Some 50Ah Lithium batteries on the market can replace batteries with the traditional 40-50Ah lead acid battery sizing.

But other 50Ah Lithium batteries are the right size to replace 55Ah lead acid batteries.

The traditional size of a 40-50Ah lead-acid battery is:

198mm (L) x 166mm (W) x 170mm (H)

The following batteries will fit as a replacement for that size of battery.

Litime 50Ah, Ultramax 40Ah Battery Reviews

Here are our pros and cons from testing these batteries, and our verdict.

best 40Ah, 50Ah Lithium

Litime 50Ah LiFePO4 Battery

It’s the No.1 40/50Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

The essential details and the advantages and disadvantages are below.

What We Liked
  • Litime are a well-respected manufacturer, for the quality of their products. And their Lithium batteries are no different. Their Lithium is top quality, as is the construction and the internal components.
  • That 15000 cycle lifespan is truly mammoth. Even though that’s an aspirational figure, getting even close to that is likely to mean a decade-long lifespan or even longer.
  • With 50Ah capacity, you’ll get a longer runtime for your scooter on each charge. That’s plenty of charge for even the biggest and heaviest mobility scooters.
  • Cheaper than our No.2, the Ultramax 40Ah battery..
  • Ltime’s BMS is one of the best Lithium BMSs on the market. That means the battery is more reliable and safer than any other.
  • It’s not a bad price at all for a Litime battery, compared to the competition.
  • You can join 4 in parallel, and 4 in series. That’s more than enough for any mobility scooter, now or even in future.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Some larger LiFePO4 batteries offer self-heating but not the 50Ah model; it’s our only real criticism.

See it on Amazon right here.

Ultramax 40Ah Lithium Battery

This is the runner-up in this section, for 40Ah to 50Ah Lithium batteries.

Check out the specs, and the likes and dislikes in our testing.

What We Liked
  • As with other Ultramax LiFePO4 batteries, it’s a good all-rounder, offering good power delivery, light weight, low-self discharge
  • Good sustained power delivery even at high discharge and strong ability to deal with being left in a discharged state.
What We Didn’t Like
  • It’s a good quality BMS, with the safety and performance features needed, but not as good as the Litime one.
  • More costly than the Litime 50Ah LiFePO4 battery, despite being 10Ah less.

Check it out here.

Best 50Ah-55Ah LiFePO4 Battery (to replace 55Ah lead-acid battery)

As we said earlier, make sure to check the dimensions – the batteries in this section are to replace a typical 55Ah lead acid battery.

If you’re replacing a 40-50Ah lead acid battery, you can check out the section above this one.

The traditional size of a 55Ah lead-acid mobility scooter battery is:

Eco-Worthy 50Ah, Ultramax 55Ah, Ultramax 50Ah Battery Reviews

Let’s check out the advantages and disadvantages we got from testing these LiFePO4 batteries.

best 50Ah, 55Ah LiFePO4

Eco-Worthy 50Ah LiFePO4 Battery

This is the top 50-55Ah Lithium battery on the UK market.

It’s a replacement for a 55Ah lead acid battery.

What We Liked
  • Eco Worthy’s Lithium batteries are high quality and known for longevity. In the case of this 50Ah battery, they reckon you’ll get 10 years lifespan, and more than that is not unrealistic.
  • Very strong power performance, this battery can deliver up to 60A discharge current. Ideal for Class 3 road scooters or any heavy scooter.
  • These 50Ah batteries can be connected in series and parallel with other batteries (in a mobility scooter any connection will tend to be in series).
  • At 50% Depth of Discharge, these batteries will last for a simply enormous 6000 cycles. What does that mean? It means if you consistently only used half charge before then recharging, it would last for 6000 uses.
  • 5 year manufacturer guarantee is pretty good.
  • Huge amount of positive reviews from many users of this battery
What We Didn’t Like
  • Doesn’t have IP56 protection like the No.3 on our list, the Ultramax 50Ah model. So it’s less protected if large amount of water reached the battery somehow. It’s likely to offer some dust and water protections, just not as much as the Ultramax battery.

Here’s where it can be found at lowest cost, on Amazon.

Ultramax 55Ah

This is the second best 50-55Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

Use as a replacement for any 55Ah lead-acid battery.

What We Liked
  • Like the Eco Worthy battery, testing shows you’re likely to get at least 10 years lifespan from this 55Ah battery.
  • Its discharge curve is a very gentle decline. What does that mean? It means it will power your scooter strongly even when the charge has dropped very low. That’s very different to lead acid batteries, where power delivery drops sharply as the battery’s charge decreases.
  • It’s only slightly more expensive than the no.3 on our list, the 50Ah Ultramax Lithium battery.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Fewer life cycles than this category’s top 50/55Ah performer. Despite the test results showing a 10 year lifespan, it’s classed as being good for 2000 life cycles, compared to 3000 cycles for the Eco Worthy 50Ah battery.
  • Charging time is long, when charging from flat. It’ll take 11 hours to fully charge, so you’ll need to leave it charging overnight.

Here’s where to check it out.

Ultramax 50Ah Lithium

This is the third best 17-22Ah Lithium battery in the UK.

It can replace any 55Ah lead-acid battery.

Here’s how it performs, and our pros and cons.

What We Liked
  • It has IP56 protection. That’s better than the IP55 protection offered by most LiFePO4 batteries on the market. That means it’s protected from powerful water jets from any angle, (basically it’s protected against anything short of full immersion in water). So even if heavy rain meant that water seeped through your mobility scooter’s battery compartment, the battery would be protected.
What We Didn’t Like
  • It cannot be connected in parallel with other batteries
  • Only a very little bit cheaper than the 55Ah model, despite having 10% smaller capacity.

Here’s best priced place to get it, on Amazon.

Best 75Ah Lithium Mobility Scooter Battery

The top Lithium batteries for mobility scooters in this section are the 75Ah capacity, and they are fine to drop in and replace a 75Ah lead-acid battery; they’re the same dimensions.

Ultramax, SLK Power 75Ah Battery Reviews

After testing these batteries, what were our likes and dislikes, and our final verdict.

best 75Ah Lithium battery

Ultramax 75Ah LiFePO4

It’s the best 75Ah Lithium battery for mobility scooters.

Here’s what it’s got going for and against it.

What We Liked
  • This Ultramax Lithium battery can provide up to 75A continuous discharge current. That means it’s a really powerful battery.
  • It’s less than one-third of the price of our no.2 in this category, the SLK Power Lithium battery (that’s partly because you have to buy 2 of the SLK batteries, they only come in pairs).
  • Gives you a lot more runtime on your scooter with each charge, compared to a 75Ah lead acid scooter battery.
  • It’s rated for 2000 cycles at 100% DoD (being consistently completely discharged). So if you’re able to charge the battery before its died completely, and do that often, you’ll get a lot more than 2000 cycles, perhaps even double or triple that amount.
What We Didn’t Like
  • Some people will prefer the known and trusted mobility scooter battery brand, SLK Power, compared to Ultramax, who don’t have as long a history for supplying mobility scooters specifically.

Check out the best priced seller on Amazon here.

SLK Power 75Ah Lithium

This is the second best 75Ah Lithium battery.

Check out the specs, and the likes and dislikes in our testing.

What We Liked
  • SLK have been a well-trusted provider of mobility scooter batteries in the UK for many years. You can certainly trust the reliability and quality of their batteries.
  • These batteries also provide excellent power, as much as 75 Amps. And they’ll maintain consistent power throughout your usage of the battery.
What We Didn’t Like
  • It’s very expensive. Lithium batteries for mobility scooters have come down in price a lot in the last year or two, this battery is yet to catch up to that.
  • You can only buy these batteries in pairs. So if you really only want a single one, you’re out of luck.

You can have a look at this battery here.

Can I replace my lead-acid battery with a Lithium battery?

If your scooter already has a Lithium battery you can replace it with another one, obviously.

And yes, you also can if your current scooter has a lead-acid battery. You can drop in a Lithium battery like those on this page as a replacement.

Just make sure it has the right dimensions.

If it has the right dimensions, it’s very likely to be the right capacity of battery also. For example, a 75Ah lead acid battery can be replaced by the 75Ah LiFePO4 batteries on this page. We’ve let you know in this article which sizes can be used to replace which battery sizes.

For example, a 22Ah Lithium battery can replace your 17Ah lead acid battery because it has the right dimensions to fit your mobility scooter.

Which Lithium battery mobility scooter should I get?

No worries, we’ve got you covered.

Check out our list of the top mobility scooters in the UK in 2022. Several of these scooters have Lithium batteries.

We’ve let you know the size of the battery for each scooter as well.

Is A Lithium Battery Best For My Scooter?

The LiFePO4 type of Lithium is what all modern Lithium batteries are made from.

And LiFePO4 is super safe, safer even than Lead-acid batteries.

It’s also MUCH longer lasting. You can get 10-12 years, or even more from Lithium batteries. You’d probably be replacing your lead-acid battery about 3 or 4 times in the same time period.

It delivers more consistent power. With Lead-acid batteries, you’ll experience drops in power when charge gets low; but with Lithium batteries, power stays strong until it’s almost our of charge. That’s the case with higher quality LiFePO4 batteries, like the ones in this article.

Best Lithium Batteries For Mobility Scooters Summary

That’s it for our analysis of the best Lithium batteries for mobility scooters.

We discussed many of the reasons why Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are better than lead-acid batteries. Those include:

  • Longer lifespan
  • Increased number of life cycles
  • Better ability to handle deep discharge
  • Better ability to handle being left in a discharged state

We also noted that in recent years the price for a LiFePO4 mobility scooter battery has come down a lot.

What does this mean for you as a mobility scooter driver?

It means that if you get a Lithium battery, your life gets a lot easier in a few ways.

It means a longer runtime for your scooter without needing to charge; stronger and more consistent power (and faster speed on your scooter), even when charge gets low.

And it means needing to replace the battery far less often, maybe even just once every 10-15 years.

Hope our analysis helped; enjoy using your Lithium mobility scooter battery, if you decided it’s right for you.
